Course Materials Provided In iLearn

Review the Instructional Materials section of SF State’s Access site for accessibility guides, checklists and resources. San Francisco State must make its instructional materials, including online course materials, accessible to persons with disabilities in order to provide all students with a barrier-free education, and to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act, and with California Government Code 11135.

iLearn Course Layout

  • Use appropriate formatting when creating content within iLearn using the tools provided by the HTML Editor. If you do not see the HTML editor, use the appropriate HTML for the content. Make certain all information conveyed through the use of color is also conveyed without the use of color.
  • Use iLearn styles (e.g., heading 1) for course titles, topic titles and subtitles.

  • Simplify your course environment by working with iLearn blocks. Delete any iLearn blocks that are not necessary, and organize your course's blocks for ease of information access.
  • Provide links to plugins, applications (e.g., downloadable file readers), and any specialized software necessary to use course files. The technical requirements page has a few recommended download links you may want to include.
  • When providing digital images use the alt attribute to describe the content and function of each visual element.

Naming Conventions in iLearn

  • Use text that makes sense when read out of context

    Example: Avoid "click here"
  • Inform users if the link will open in new window or pop-up

    Example: Add "- New Window" to end of the link text
  • Resource file names and link to the files should match any reference to them in the syllabus, calendars, activities, and course announcements.
  • Avoid abbreviations
  • The file name should include the file type or three letter extension to identify the type of software required to view and use the file

    Example: Biology333syllabus.rtf
  • Avoid redundancies when naming activities or resource links

    Example: Use the name "Journal Week 1" instead of the more generic "Weekly Journal"

Screen Reader Profile Preference

Screen reader users can set iLearn to generate screen reader friendly pages. Enabling this option generates a simple page layout which works better with screen readers by preventing frames from being displayed with the system navigation and adding descriptions that are read by screen reader software.

To enable this personal option you will need to edit your profile by clicking on your name at the top of any iLearn page, and then on the Edit profile tab. Click the Show Advanced button, then select Yes from the Screen Reader pull-down menu. Click on the Update Profile button to save the changes to your profile.

iLearn Quizzes

  • If a students asks for accommodations such as additional time to complete a quiz, he or she should first provide instructors with a memo from the Disability Programs and Resource Center (DPRC) stating what disability-related accommodations they are eligible to receive. Students without verification should be referred to DPRC:
  • If a student needs a DPRC proctor, reader, or writer to
    complete an iLearn quiz, review the DPRC Test Accommodation Procedures and complete the FAST form (PDF).
  • To provide select student(s) with additional time to complete an iLearn quiz please contact the iLearn support team to discuss some strategies.
